I recall a story a read a long time ago (decades) wherein Hitler is
dead, but not dead...poisoned by rebels...coagulated stalgmites of
blood hanging from his mouth, while dark spirits in his thrall prowl
and hunt those who do not worship the victory parades. It involved a
time traveller/alternate universe traveller who draws some of these
demons back to our existence and they are shot by a large caliber
weapon...the story ends with this scene in the water of a beach.

Any idea of the title and story please, I would like to obtain and
read it again.

Was this the one that starts in this world with a story about a
strangely pale, dark haired couple living on a greek island? The couple
turn out to be refugees from the alternate reality. If so I don't think
it's quite as you recall, but close.

Danged if I can recall title and author at the moment.

Yes! That's it by golly. A good short story and I wish I could recall
the author and title so I could hunt it down for a re-read.

Thanks anyhow

It's in one of the Best SF of the year collections edited by Gardner
Dozois. I can't recall which one at the moment. Unfortunately I'm in the
middle of having the house worked over by painters and decorators and my
books are all in a lock-up store. If I get time I'll see if I can find
the box, the book and then the story in question.

Hiya Steve. Did you have any time to see if you could find this story
yet? There is a partial list of all of the Dozois anthologies on
Wikipedia but even the title of the story, let alone its author,
doesn't gel. I do remember there was a dead Hitler in it, of
poisoning, but still supernaturally alive, spectres like ghostly
Gestapo, a triumph in the streets, etc. I am going through some
upheavals at the moment, so if you can't do it, I probably won't ask
again.

Thanks in any case.

Steve, say no more. Its "A Spanish Lesson" by Lucius Shepherd. Thanks
for your efforts...
